Why should it be so unusual to purchase locally grown produce from a supermarket? Or, more pertinent: Why am I not shocked that the Department of Agriculture actually makes life more difficult for enterprising, local, independent farmers? The big corporate fruit and vegetable farmers in California and Florida monopolize the produce market because they fear competition,?competition that is necessary in a free market to keep prices at an affordable and reasonable amount. Even the most gender-aware college student sometimes falls back into the conventional forms of gender oppression in one area: dating. "Not another article on that feminist crap," you may think, though I would never accuse anyone of judging me right away. But, rest assured, this topic concerns men at least as much as it concerns women. (1) comment
Dear Editor, I would like to respond to the letter submitted by John Gordon in the April 20 edition of the St. Norbert Times. As a religious studies and fine art student who respectfully disagrees with several of his points, I felt inclined to respond. Gordon first advises that the Art discipline should have banned one student's photograph containing a nude penis from display in the senior art show. (1) comment
St. Norbert College, like most institutions of higher learning, is its own world. It is in its own "college bubble" that secludes it from the outside world. Everything is on campus, or extremely close to it, and venturing out into the "real" world isn't necessary. (0) comments
Why are guys afraid of commitment? I think the first thing we need to establish is this: women are just as afraid of commitment as men are. It remains a common stereotype that men are always the ones to jump ship first, which simply isn't true. Part of the problem seems to be that all the girls who want a committed relationship are actually getting involved with guys who are looking for the opposite, and vice versa. (0) comments
To me, April 15 is Tax Day. Some people, however, have coined it as "Taxed Enough Already" Day. Tea Parties took place all over the country, symbolizing the Boston Tea Party's notion of "taxation without representation." "Tea baggers" are the fiscally conservative individuals who are angry about high taxes, wasteful spending and socialism. (4) comments
When a high school senior makes that decision about which college he or she would like to attend, most do so with the idea that they will be completing all four years of their college education at the school that they pick. This, as many of us know, is not always the case. (0) comments
All year long, I've been thinking about St. Norbert College's attempts to be ecumenical and welcome students of different faiths and denominations. Then, just before the Lenten season, I received a letter in my suite box from Father James Baraniak O.Praem. (0) comments
"The horror, the horror…: the Schuldes Athletic Center" Saint Norbert College will always state that the "student" comes first in "student-athlete," and rightfully so. The athletes that participate in intercollegiate athletics in Saint Norbert strive to attain superior grades; about one in every three SNC student athletes has received Academic All-Conference awards for their hard work and dedication. This is what freedom means to me: I am entitled to hold whichever beliefs I choose and challenge the beliefs of others-but only if I'm willing to be challenged back, to actually listen to those who disagree. In order to fully possess my own freedoms, I have to accept the freedoms of others, even when they are employed in ways I find offensive or just irritating. (1) comment
It is interesting how sometimes years need to go by before we understand certain events in our lives. Although I never fully understood the value of journalism-until I edited a newspaper, that is-my first experience with it was when in eight grade I tried to create a news-magazine for my school. As a journalist, freedom of speech and of the press are two rights that should remain near and dear to my heart. Unfortunately I am not known for speaking my mind on issues, and usually do not defend my beliefs, attitudes or values when I'm surrounded by others whose beliefs, attitudes and values differ from my own. When I arrived at St. Norbert College, one of the first things I asked people on campus was, "How can I start writing for the newspaper?" But I soon was disappointed to find out that, at this time, the paper hardly even existed. The 2006/07 editor published a few pages here and there but failed to respond to any of my emails inquiring about how I could get involved. (0) comments
