The first-ever student-run art gallery, called "Recipe for Art," opened its doors on Nov. 29 at 3 p.m. with a reception. The gallery was put on as a way for students to display their work before their senior shows. St. Norbert College's ARTCLUB members contributed their work in order to show the process behind creating each piece of art. For art majors and non-art majors alike, being able to see the multiple steps behind making each art piece was insightful.

"Alphabugs," a digital illustration by Kevin McGillivray ‘12 was very creative and colorful. The step-by-step process that McGillivray used to make his piece was fascinating. Each bug in his art featured a letter of the alphabet as a part of its anatomy. For example, the main feature was a bright, colorful bumblebee that featured a "B" for its wings. McGillivray's artistic style was very thoughtful and cartoon-like.

Carolyn Paplham's ‘13 digital illustration entitled "A Thief in the Night" showed deep colors with great detail and shading. Paplham showed just how talented she is when featuring a potential graphic novel character. I loved her style; it drew me in and made me want to know the story behind the figure in her piece.

Mikaela Benner's ‘13 "Scene from ‘Emperor Mage' of the Immortals Quartet by Tamora Pierce" showcased the time-consuming process to create graphic novel artwork. Her comic strips were very detailed, interesting, and showed great potential. The various comic strips featured show just how dedicated Benner is to her graphic art.

"Struggle. Reflect. Ask." by Larry March '13 was a multimedia art piece. A detailed description of the process of creating March's piece stated that he had spent roughly fourteen hours on the piece. March's art piece was a mirror with a bright paint border. Around the sides of the mirror, there were words such as "lust," "temperance," "chastity," "charity," and "patience." Each word had glow-in-the-dark paint around the border. March's piece was very unique and stood out in the gallery.

ARTCLUB's hard work, time and dedication are evident in their work. The gallery will be open on the second floor of the Busch Art Center through the end of the semester, and more shows are being planned for next semester.
