At the beginning of every year, all of our favorite celebrities put on their Sunday best (literally) and go to the Grammy Awards. Us little people are lucky enough to watch it on our TVs at home. This year's big winners were Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, The Black Eyed Peas, Kings of Leon and Maxwell. There were notable performances by Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Elton John, Green Day, The Black Eyed Peas, Pink, Dave Matthews Band, Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks, Bon Jovi, and a 3-D tribute to Michael Jackson by Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Smokey Robinson and Carrie Underwood.Taylor Swift and Beyoncé dominated the Grammys this year. Swift won Album of the Year ("Fearless"), Best Country Album ("Fearless"), Best Female Country Vocal Performance ("White Horse") and Best Country Song ("White Horse"). Although Swift dropped and broke one of her Grammys at the end of the night as she was posing for a picture, it was still an extremely successful night-she beat out Beyoncé, The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and Dave Matthews Band for Album of the Year.
Beyoncé made history as she left with six awards, beating the record for most wins for a woman in one year. She won Song of the Year ("Single Ladies"), Best Female Pop Vocal Performance ("Halo"), Best Female R&B Vocal Performance ("Single Ladies"), Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance ("At Last"), Best Contemporary R&B Album ("I Am. Sasha Fierce") and Best R&B Song ("Single Ladies"). We were all thankful (maybe some of us disappointed) when Kanye West wasn't there to humiliate Swift as he did at the Video Music Awards when Swift beat Beyoncé for Album of the Year.
Kings of Leon won Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best Rock Song for "Use Somebody." When Kings of Leon went to accept the award for Record of the Year, they admitted to having a couple drinks before hand. Luckily, their acceptance speech wasn't nearly as bad as Mariah Carey's drunken acceptance speech at the Palm Springs Gala. They were also nominated for Song of the Year, but lost out to Beyoncé.
Best Rock Album went to Green Day for "21st Century Breakdown." Zac Brown Band won Best New Artist and Lady Gaga won Best Electronic/Dance Album and Best Dance Recording.
Some of the performances at the Grammys were phenomenal and will be popular on YouTube for years to come. Some of the best performances of the night came from Dave Matthews Band, Lady Gaga and Elton John, Pink, Beyoncé, and Bon Jovi. Other performances will be watched repeatedly for how bad they were, such as Swift's off-pitch singing during her duet with Stevie Nicks.
The most spectacular performance of the night, however, was the 3-D tribute to Michael Jackson sung by Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Smokey Robinson and Carrie Underwood. They sang "Earth Song," from Michael Jackson's "This Is It." The song's beautiful message urges us to take care of our planet and humanity. After the performance, Michael Jackson's children Prince and Paris accepted an award for Honorary Lifetime Achievement on their father's behalf bringing the audience to their feet and to tears.
Undoubtedly, one of the worst performances of the night came from the Black Eyed Peas. They sang "Imma Be," and the 2009 anthem, "I Gotta Feeling." Unfortunately, the vocals were way off tune and beat. Between that and the back-up dancers that looked like transformers and Fergie's futuristic poker player outfit, the whole performance did not live up to the high standards that the Black Eyed Peas raised through their popular success.
Although the night was extremely successful for some and not so successful for others, the whole night was entertaining for viewers. The beautiful celebrities, the stunning outfits, the spectacular performances, and the exciting wins made for yet another glorious Grammy night.
