The first annual Inter-Residential Olympics started in a big way. Sunday night's opening ceremony set the tone for the rest of the week. Michael Poradek '11 was master of ceremonies and introduced the festivities in both English and French, which are the official languages of the Olympics.
The newly renovated Todd Wehr Hall is now officially open and available for one-stop-shopping to the college community at St. Norbert. The grand opening began with a type of show-and-tell of the many aspects of the hall. Visitors were allowed to explore the halls and some of the different departments which now include Financial Aid, Academic Advising, Bursar, Discoveries International and Career Services.
With their win over Ripon, the Green Knight softball team finished their regular season with a perfect 13-0 record to win the Midwest Conference and finished 27-6 overall. With their regular season title, St. Norbert earned the right to host the Midwest Conference tournament, which will take place next Friday and Saturday, May 7-8.
An event of recognition was held on April 29 for students who submitted literary work over the past year. Students of all disciplines submitted work in the hope of being recognized for their talent in writing and also for monetary prizes. The event that awards students for literary work at the college started more than fifteen years ago.
"Change yourself. Change your community. Change your world," was the theme of this year's annual Norbertine Leadership and Service Awards. Students, faculty, parents, staff, and supporters took a break from the often chaotic end of year activities to acknowledge each other's positive impact on their communities large and small.
Tuition alone is not enough to finance education at St. Norbert. "Though we do everything we can to carefully manage our resources and make the best use of every dollar here at St. Norbert College, unfortunately, tuition doesn't cover the cost of SNC education," said Eileen Jahnke, vice president for business and finance.
With the school year coming to a close, students and especially graduates have career-planning on their minds. So, what can the conscientious grad expect for the year 2010? Though the economic climate is still fairly bleak, according to CNN.com the job outlook for 2010 will see a slight upturn compared to 2009 with smaller businesses providing a "bright spot" for job-seeking graduates.
The talent was out in full force last Friday night in the Campus Center. WSNC and E2K co-hosted Knight Stock, the St. Norbert College student talent show. "I was extremely satisfied in the number of participants we had at Knight Stock," said Tim Muldoon '12, master of ceremonies for the evening.
As summer nears, one activity is sure to be on everyone's to do list: see some live music. Luckily you don't need to go far to find some great music for a decent price this summer. Verge Music Festival - Milwaukee's newest music festival was announced at the beginning of this year, under the name of Your Music Festival, which encouraged people to come up with a name and design for the new festival.
St. Norbert lacrosse finished their season in Platteville, Wis., playing in the playoffs for the first time in school history. In the first round, the team played the first seed and undefeated College of Holy Cross, who went on to win the whole tournament.
It was on Sunday, April 25 when St. Norbert College President Thomas Kunkel threw the first pitch at Miller Park for the Milwaukee Brewer baseball game against their rival, the Chicago Cubs. This was a monumental occasion not only for SNC but also for all private colleges across Wisconsin.
