Seventy-one graduating seniors in numerous fields of study were honored for their academic achievements at the annual Academic Awards Dinner. The event, held on April 21, 2009 in the Sensenbrenner Memorial Union, was well-attended by honorees and members of the faculty and included speeches, a meal and the distribution of awards.
Controversy has recently hit South Bend, Ind. The news of President Barack Obama being invited to make a commencement speech at Notre Dame University may seem typical considering that Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush have all previously spoken at Notre Dame during their time in office.
When students saw posters around campus advertising Knight Theatre's latest production "Tartuffe," I'm sure many of them turned their heads asking their friends, "What the heck does that mean?" For those who don't know-and I'm sure most who did not see the play held April 17-25 in Webb Theatre do not-the word tartuffe is a French word meaning "a hypocrite, especially one who affects religious piety.
The Green Knights competed well against the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) this year. In double-headers against UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Platteville, SNC was able to take the first game each. Following the second game against the Oshkosh Titans, the team won its next five games.
The St. Norbert College president's cabinet is currently in the process of reviewing the current age requirement policy to decide whether or not some or all students under the age of seventeen should be allowed the privilege of living on campus. The topic of concern is that the College would be held responsible if anything were to happen to a minor on campus.
As the academic year draws to a close, the departures and changes in College Advancement appear to be continuing, with two additional employees recently informed they would be leaving the department. Phil Oswald, vice president for college advancement, has eliminated the St.
With the Miriam B. and James J. Mulva Library scheduled to open in the fall 2009, many members of the St. Norbert College community are wondering: what will happen to the Todd Wehr Library? The Wehr Library, originally built as a residential hall, will house offices and services that are currently scattered across SNC's campus.
For the first three years of college, most students love the final month of school. The weather is finally warm, classes are coming to an end, and it's time to go home. "Summer always meant seeing my high school friends, it was something to look forward to and be happy about," reflects Kelly Fleming '09.
Many students might agree that one of the greatest rewards of attending a small college campus is the opportunity to get involved in student life by becoming part of an organization that one believes in. There are over 65 student organizations at St. Norbert, and every year new organizations are formed from committed students who are passionate about a cause or special interest, who devote their time and energy towards raising student awareness and creating change.
"A community can be judged by the amount of equality it provides," said Max Klos '12 at the "Value our Families" info session, held in the Campus Center Lounge in late April. At this session, members of a special topics Sociology course informed the campus community about the actions other colleges and universities have taken to provide equalizing benefits for both married couples and legally domiciled families.
Why should it be so unusual to purchase locally grown produce from a supermarket? Or, more pertinent: Why am I not shocked that the Department of Agriculture actually makes life more difficult for enterprising, local, independent farmers? The big corporate fruit and vegetable farmers in California and Florida monopolize the produce market because they fear competition,?competition that is necessary in a free market to keep prices at an affordable and reasonable amount.
Soothing. Relaxing. Innovating. These three words perfectly describe the mood, tone and content of one of the world's major music genres: jazz. Jazz has been maintained throughout the years by the likes of musicians Louis Armstrong and Etta James, and continues today with jazz-influenced pop artists Michael Bublé and Adele.
If you ever walk through Schuldes Sports Center, you will see many trophy cases and banners displaying the great athletes and teams that have been a part of the St. Norbert culture since its conception. What is probably more impressive than the banners and national champions is how many people are recognized on the walls in the hallways outside the coaches' offices and locker rooms for their athletic and academic excellence.
In his first year of eligibility, Jim Purtill has been inducted into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Purtill is the nineteenth college coach to enter the WFCA Hall of Fame and the fourth from the Midwest Conference. "Any time you get recognition it's a great compliment to the program," Purtill said.
As the track season comes to a close, the athletes begin preparing for both the conference and national finals. Ashley Graybill '09 and Jenny Scherer '10 are two athletes who stand out this season. Both Graybill and Scherer posses several SNC Indoor and Outdoor records and are both looking forward to potentially representing SNC at the Division III Outdoor Championships.
